In 1969, designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa conceived the Soriana for the renowned Italian firm Figli di Amedeo Cassina. This creation followed the success of their previous works, including the 924 lounge chair, 121 chairs, and the Ciprea armchair.
During this period, advancements in polyurethane foam molding techniques opened new perspectives in sofa design. The concept behind Soriana was to create a voluminous bundle by wrapping a mass of wool in fabric, then giving it form and support with an external steel clamp. The foundation of the design is a slender wooden slab.
Initially, Afra and Tobia Scarpa developed a lounge chair under this design philosophy. Subsequently, they expanded this concept into a comprehensive range of seating options.
The padding of Soriana is made of polyurethane foam and Dacron fiberfill, upholstered with wool or leather and enveloped by a clamp made of chromed steel. Two parts compose the external cage. Two steel plates link them with the basis. Then, two covered buttons on the sides of the backrest link the coating with the external support elements. Furthermore, two covered buttons placed on the front of the backrest tighten the upholstery to improve the shape. This is possible since a wire links them with two plastic supports embedded in the back of the clamp.
